Why you might need a root canal

You’re most likely here because your dentist already told you that you’ll need a root canal. But why is that? Well, a root canal is usually necessary when the pulp (the soft tissue inside your tooth) becomes infected or inflamed, usually due to a deep cavity or injury. This can cause severe pain, sensitivity, and even abscesses. In some cases, you might not feel any pain at all if the nerve in your tooth has died (R.I.P.)

Let our endodontists get you smiling again from root to tip!

So, how is a root canal done? First, we’ll numb the area around the tooth to ensure you’re comfortable throughout the process. Then, we’ll create an opening in the top of the tooth to access the pulp before removing it and cleaning out the root canals. Once the canals are clean, we’ll fill them with a special material and seal the opening with a temporary filling. You’ll then need to return to our practice a few weeks later to have a permanent filling or crown fitted.

I recently visited Dickens Yard Dental as a new patient and was seen by Dr Sahil. He was extremely friendly and made sure to explain everything in detail, often stopping to see if I had any questions on what he had explained. Overall, it was a very good experience, and I felt that Dr Sahil was very knowledgeable and provided excellent care.

Have questions? We thought you might!

If you’re experiencing severe tooth pain, sensitivity to hot or cold, or notice swelling around your tooth, you should book a consultation with our root canal specialist. They’ll be able to examine your tooth and determine whether a root canal is necessary.
In most cases, yes. After your root canal, your tooth may be weaker and more prone to cracking, so we’ll usually recommend fitting a crown to protect it. In some cases, you may only need a filling to keep your tooth nice and secure after your root canal.
The cost of root canal treatment varies depending on the complexity of the procedure, but our private root canal treatments start at £450. Since every case is different, we recommend you chat to one of our root canal specialists for an accurate price.
While both procedures can be used to treat a damaged or infected tooth, a root canal aims to save the tooth by removing the infected pulp and filling the canals, whereas an extraction involves removing the entire tooth.
While you might experience some discomfort during the procedure, we’ll make sure you’re as comfortable as possible throughout it. Most people find that root canal treatment is no more painful than getting a filling. Plus, you’ll have our friendly dentists and calm, modern surroundings to put you at ease the entire time.
